Helping Children Beat the Odds

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps vulnerable children beat the odds. The organization depends on

donations to help conduct background checks and provide training for volunteers to ensure

child safety. The agency also provides ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to

help build and sustain long-lasting relationships, key to successful mentoring. Big Brothers Big

Sisters is proven by independent research to improve children’s odds for succeeding in school,

behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and breaking negative cycles. Big Brothers

Big Sisters Lone Star is the largest Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in the nation.

About the Match – Bigs and Littles

Bigs (volunteers) and Littles (children) and their families are from all walks of life and are as

diverse as America. What our Littles have in common is a desire to have a Big, plus a parent

or other caring adult in their life who feels they need one. What Bigs have in common is a

willingness to share some fun with a young person. Bigs consistently say they get as much out of

being matched as their Littles.

It Works!

National research reveals that Littles are more likely to show positive behaviors in school and at

home than children not matched with a Big. Our matches are effective because professional staff

ensure that the relationships are safe and rewarding for everyone involved.

Innovative Initiatives – Greater Impact

This past year we’ve stayed close to our clients, donors, partners and volunteers, adapting to

their changing needs. In doing so, we were able to serve almost 10,000 children in mentoring

relationships. Our boards and staff have collaborated in the development of innovative and

resourceful initiatives that will serve our children more effectively and provide our clients with a

more significant mentoring experience than ever before.

Funds Raised Make a Direct Impact

Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to invest 76% of all revenue received back into our programs.

That means for every $1 Big Brothers Big Sisters receives, $.76 goes directly to supporting our

mission of matching a child with a caring mentor.
