Our Work

Social Capital:

Our roots stem from the fight for social justice. Over 100 years ago, Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded on the principle that every individual [regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, gender expression, ideology, income, national origin, race or sexual orientation, marital or veteran status] has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our many initiatives help support our commitment.

Big Brothers Big Sisters knows that talent is distributed equally, but opportunity is not. Social capital looks at how mentoring can distribute equal opportunity for kids. Where mentors can share knowledge, experience and opportunities to further the growth of mentees so that every child has the opportunity to reach their highest potential in life.

Educational Achievement:

BBBS mentors provide their Littles the access and accountability that helps them feel empowered at school and achieve academic success, even during times of adversity. Past studies found that BBBS Littles skipped fewer classes than their peers, missed half as many school days, and felt more confident doing homework.

Emotional Well Being:

Volunteer mentors with Big Brothers Big Sisters provide consistent emotional support that promotes positive mental health in children by:

    • Establishing systems of adult support outside of parent groups
    • Spending faithful and consistent time with a caring adult
    • Accepting children for who they are
    • These factors build resilience in children during times of confusion and adversity.

BBBS will follow any and all applicable CDC COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time of the event. We will personally notify you if BBBS has to adjust due to COVID-19 guidelines. BBBS is working out details for this year's Big Black Tie Ball while keeping in mind safety, vaccination rates and local and state guidelines.
